Listening Awareness in March

When it comes to caring for a person with dementia, words do matter. And, in honor of National Listening Awareness Month in March, we are sharing an article St. John's Dementia Quality of Life Specialist Mimi Devinney (Ask Mimi) wrote for McKnight's Long-Term Care in 2020. Listening awareness is about recognizing that individuals receive, construct meaning from, and respond to spoken or nonverbal messages differently. As DeVinney said, “changing the way we talk about people living with dementia is an important step towards honoring them as individuals.”

Nutrition for the Dementia Brain

Fueling our brains with the right food is just as important as fueling our bodies.

Neuroscientists, dementia researchers, and registered dietitians often work closely together to understand the impact nutrition has on the brain. In observance of National Nutrition Month in March, you may wish to explore the question: “Are there foods that are bad for my brain?” Having a loved one with dementia may keep this concern top of mind.
