September marks the start of Fall and the time of year that National Fall Prevention Month is observed. The purpose of this observance is to raise awareness of the dangers of falls, especially for older adults, and to help reduce the risk of falls. Falls are the leading cause of injuries for people over 65 and one in four older Americans fall every year. Several studies show that those living with cognitive disorders, such as dementia, are more likely to fall and keep falling. Caregivers can help with prevention.
There are certainly many different books for dementia caregivers featuring stories, tools, advice, and resources. However, not every one is as comprehensive and formatted in such a way as to specifically cater to the unique needs of caregivers. Let us call out four reasons Alzheimer’s The Uncertain Journey: Navigating the Challenges is one to keep nearby throughout the dementia “journey.”
For those considering reading Creating Moments of Joy by Jolene Brackey for the first time this fall, a special four-session virtual community book club will be coordinated with the help of the author herself, who will also visit Rochester in early November. Register today for the book club and to see Jolene speak in Rochester, New York on Thursday, November 7 at Brickstone by St. John’s.
